NSW Transport Minister Andrew Constance announced that the formal planning process has started for the next part of the Sydney Metro City & Southwest project, with a State Significant Infrastructure Application Report lodged on 16 February 2017 for the Sydenham to Bankstown upgrade.
“Thousands of people are now suffering a transport bottleneck on the Bankstown line. Metro will mean faster journeys, more trains and better connections for the south west. Right now, there’s a train every 8 minutes in the peak at major stations along the line, and just four trains an hour at the rest. With Metro, we’ll be running a train every 4 minutes in the peak at all stations, with plenty of room to grow in the future,” Constance said.
Sydney Metro will take advantage of the four annual scheduled maintenance closures of the Bankstown Line to do upgrade work. To complete the Sydenham to Bankstown upgrade, a closure of between three to six months will be required to do work that can only be done once Sydney Trains have stopped operating on the line. This closure will be just before metro services start in 2024.
Planning approval was received earlier this year for the Chatswood to Sydenham section of Sydney Metro, including the twin tunnels under Sydney Harbour. Construction starts this year, with the first of five tunnel boring machines in the ground by the end of next year.
