The National Electoral Commission of Slovenia announced that a repeat referendum on the “Act on the construction, management and governance of the Divača-Koper second rail track” would be held on 13 May.
The National Electoral Commission also decided that work on preparing the referendum will start on 3 April. During the referendum campaign those supporting and opposing the “Act on the second track” will be able to convince voters on the advantages or weaknesses of the government project.
The Ministry of Infrastructure and the government have not decided yet on whether to take part in the referendum campaign. “We believe that citizens will once again support our decision at the repeat referendum, as it was already backed in the first referendum,” the Ministry of Infrastructure stated.
For this project, the European Commission announced that it will invest EUR 109.03 million.
In September 2017, the Government announced that, under the referendum, 53.5 percent voted in favor of the project. 46.5 percent of the voters were against the implementation of the project.
Divača – Koper project involves the duplication of the railway will be carried out by building a 27-km section and, because of the difficult terrain and environmental constraints, 75% of its length will be built through 8 tunnels.
Costs are estimated at around EUR 1 billion and works could be completed in 6 years.
