Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull announced a AUD 220 million (USD 166.5 million) investment to upgrade 1000 km of freight rail in the Victoria’s Murray Basin.
Murray Basin Rail will deliver important upgrades to Victoria’s rail freight network to meet the increasing demand for freight services.
The Victorian Government has committed up to AUD 220 million to deliver the project in the 2015-16 Victorian Budget. This included AUD 25 million for further maintenance works on the Mildura freight line between Yelta and Maryborough, including the replacement of 3,400 metres of rail and nearly 100,000 sleepers.
In February 2015, the Victorian Government fast-tracked AUD 5 million towards critical maintenance works and A further AUD 5 million was used to plan and design the second stage of the AUD 416 million Murray Basin Rail Project, which will standardise the Murray Basin rail network and increase axle loading to 21 tonnes.
