Bombardier announced it has reached an agreement with the employee representation in Germany on restructuring and reorganisation proposals until December 2019. The plan, launched in 2017, does not involve the closure of any factory, but the role of some of them will change. The reorientation, which is expected to be completed by 2020, offers all German locations a long-term and sustainable perspective. The plans also include arrangements to reduce up to 2,200 positions in Germany by 2020, with around a third of them being temporary jobs. Of the total number of jobs currently available, 700 are on a temporary contract basis.
Bombardier hopes that with these measures, its German rolling stock division will turn out to be profitable after 2020, as it has been making losses since 2011.
„Our transformation covers three crucial points: the implementation of our platform strategy through higher product standardisation, the specialisation of our locations with clear assignment of competences and investments in digitisation. With this programme, Bombardier will become significantly more efficient and thus more competitive in Germany”, Michael Fohrer, Head of Bombardier Transportation in Germany said.
Local media reports that the plant in Hennigsdorf will become the global development center for metro trainsets and some of the work here will be transferred to Bautzen, the main factory for the production of light rail vehicles. Bautzen will benefit from an investment of EUR 30 million. Also, the production of regional and long-distance trains as well as suburban trains will be set at the plant in Bautzen.
The Görlitz plant, currently producing passenger coaches and car-bodies, will become the largest Bombardier double-decker trains and trams assembly center and will benefit from a EUR 8 million investment. However, Görlitz could reduce the number of jobs by 400.
