NAH.SH orders additional EMUs

Alstom electric multiple unitsSchleswig-Holstein Local Transport Association, NAH.SH, placed an order for 42 additional Alstom electric multiple units.

The contract was signed by Müslüm Yakisan, Alstom president for DACH Region and Arne Beck, Managing Director of NAH.SH in the presence of the Schleswig-Holstein Minister of Transport Claus Ruhe Madsen and representatives of Alstom Transport Deutschland.

Shortly before the contract was signed, the Finance Committee of the Danish Parliament had agreed to allow Netz Mitte’s traffic to run from Hamburg to Tinglev – with the corresponding cost contribution from Denmark. The order was therefore increased from the original 40 to 42 multiple units in order to have enough vehicles available for the additional route to Tinglev, in Aabenraa Municipality in Region of Southern Denmark.

The Coradia Stream high capacity electric multiple units are scheduled to run on the Central/South-West railway network on the RE 7/70 Kiel/Flensburg – Hamburg and RB 61/71 Wrist/Itzehoe – Hamburg rail routes from December 2027.These two rail networks together cover a third of all rail traffic in the north with most people travelling on these rail lines.

In July 2023, Alstom was awarded a contract for the supply of 40 Coradia Stream high-capacity electric multiple units including an option for up to 55 additional vehicles. The EUR 900 million contract also covers a full-service package for rolling stock maintenance over a period of 30 years.

The ordered Alstom electric multiple units provide a good combination of capacity, comfort and energy efficiency. Passengers can look forward to very modern and reliable trains.

The four-car trains will comprise two double-decker and two single-decker cars and will have a capacity of 360 or 390 seats respectively, from previously 350 or 259/320 seats.

The new trains will be equipped with Wi-Fi as well as large displays for improved passenger information including the next stop, connections of overview /map of the next stop points, reservation system and occupancy displays so that travellers can see from displays on the platform which areas still have free seats.

The free-barrier single-decker railcars will have areas for two wheelchairs as well as multi-purpose areas. The new trains will deliver more than 40 seats with greater seat spacing for passengers with reduced mobility and will provide spaces for up to 24 bicycles. They will offer space for at least 40 large pieces of luggage per train and luggage racks on each upper floor in the vehicles to run on the Teilnetz Mitte (Central network) and areas for 24 large pieces of luggage per vehicle in the trains which will operate on the Teilnetz Süd-West network.

Today DB Regio and Nordbahn run on the RE 7, RE 70, RB 61 and RB 71 railway lines. Their transport contracts expire in December 2027 and NAH.SH is currently on procedure to select the operator with the contract expected to be awarded in the second quarter of 2024.
