The first of the 24 new C2 metro trains arrived in Munich and will enter passenger services beginning of 2020 on U2, U3 and U6, Siemens Mobility announced.
In 2016, the city ordered 45 C2 type metro trains
Starting 2010, Munich has launched a programme for the procurement of new metro trains, marking the largest order for rolling stock in its history.
Initially, Munich City Utilities ordered 21 new six-car C2 type underground trains worth EUR 185 million. At the same time, SWM took out two options on a further 46 underground trains, totaling 276 cars, which can be exercised until 2016 and 2020, respectively. The total volume of the order, including the options, was EUR 550 million.
The new metro trains are largely based on the well-known C car design used for the previous generation of vehicles. Further development of the proven vehicle design has made the new C2 type trains even more customer-friendly, economical and ecological than the C1 type. A great deal has been adopted from the latest development in metro vehicles, which is marketed by Siemens under the name Inspiro.
The new C train include not only its high passenger capacity, acceleration rate and availability, but also its end-to-end accessibility, its interior layout and wide passenger doors. The train is also more than 95 percent recyclable and especially energy-efficient thanks to the recovery of up to 50 percent of the braking energy.
The new trains will be operated on the existing routes of the Munich Metro. They are intended to substitute 40-year-old trains of the Stadtwerke Munich and are also operated as additional trains to shorten headway to provide more passenger capacity on the existing lines.
Trains are being built and subjected to static testing in the Siemens plant in Vienna, Austria. The final assembly of the trains in series production takes place in the Siemens plant in Munich, Germany.
