Moscow Metro to manage city’s tram network

Moscow tram networkThe Moscow tram network has been transferred to Moscow Metro that will manage it, following the city’s transport system integration strategy, the Deputy Mayor for Transport Maxim Liksutov announced.

“Moscow Metro is a leader among non-automated metros as far as headway is concerned. That’s because our infrastructure maintenance standards are one of the strictest, safest and best in the world. So, we should apply these practices in other modes of transport, particularly in urban rail transit that from now on will face stricter requirements,” Maxim Liksutov said.

The centralised management and the modernisation of the tram infrastructure is expected to increase the transport speed, the quality of the infrastructure, as well as to improve track maintenance and halve the number of repairs and cut maintenance costs.

“Besides, we have already renewed most of the tram fleet and in 1-2 years all the old vehicles will be ultimately replaced with the new ones,” Liksutov explained.

Moscow continues to create an integrated transport system. The city government has implemented some measures that included the introduction of a single navigation system, intermodal assistance service for passengers with reduced mobility and smart ticketing system. The latter received the Best Smart Ticketing Programme Award 2020 and saw further upgrade with a new MaaS app presented in November.

Moscow Metro is one of the most dynamically developing transport systems in the world. Today it has 789 km of tracks, 335 stations, 17 lines, 20 depots, including the Monorail, Moscow Central Circle (MCC), the Moscow Central Diameters (MCD). Its total length is planned to double by 2023 comparing to 2010.

The Moscow tram is 121 old and starting 2011, the system has been rapidly reviving by the opening of the closed routes and the construction of new tram connections.  Currently, the length of Moscow tram network is almost 420 km of single tracks. On a weekday more than 620 trams run on 40 routes, transporting 700,000 passengers daily.
