Russian President Vladimir Putin and Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin have inaugurated the first section of Moscow Metro Line 16 on September 7, 2024 connecting Novatorskaya and Tyutchevskaya.
The 8.3 km section with four stations will improve transport services for more than 800,000 people and reduce the burden on the Kaluzhsko – Rizhskaya (Line 6) and Sokolnicheskaya (Line 1) metro lines, as well as on the adjacent street and road network.
“We are opening a new metro line, the Troitskaya metro line which includes several stations: Novatorskaya, People’s Friendship University, Generala Tyuleneva, and Tyutchevskaya. About 800,000 people live close to these stations. We intend to complete this line in several stages,” Sergey Sobyanin said.
According to the mayor, there is an increased demand for transport infrastructure development in and around the city, so the authorities continue to implement major projects. “One of such projects is the construction of the Troitsk metro line [ Moscow Metro Line 16 ], which will have 43 km and served by 17 stations. It will run from ZIL, from the middle part of Moscow, the Moscow Central Ring, crossing the Big Circle Line and going all the way to the science city of Troitsk,” Sobyanin said.
Each station on the new section features a unique architectural design reflecting its location and historical significance. From Novatorskaya, designed in the style of Moscow windows, to Universitet Druzhby Narodov, aimed at international students, each station offers an exciting visual experience.
The new section will bring benefits for Moscow residents, including 25% shorter travel time across the city for 1 million people, new accessible routes with convenient connections to the Big Circle Line (BCL), while 200,000 students and employees of educational, scientific, and medical institutions will benefit improved access.
The line is operated by modern Moskva-2024 trains featuring state-of-the-art amenities for a comfortable journey.
The new line will reduce congestion on Line 6 and Line 1 by 20% and will alleviate road traffic on several arteries which will result in up to 10% traffic improvement.
Moscow has built 119 metro stations and the Moscow Central Ring, which expanded the metro network by almost two times and also constructed Moscow Central Diameters. Currently, Moscow Central Ring has 156 million trips a year, the Moscow Central Diameter system recorded 513 million trips in 2023 and the Big Circle Line registers 348 million trips a year.
“Moscow has made great strides in expanding its metro network, and the credit for these efforts goes to those who work in this sector. It plays a pivotal role in the municipal economy. As I congratulate the people of Moscow, I cannot fail to express my gratitude to those who have made all this a reality, primarily metro construction workers and all those working in this sector which has so much importance for Moscow,” Vladimir Putin said.
The entire line is expected to be in passenger services in 2029.
