PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe signed an agreement for the modernisation of Lesser Poland – Silesian voivodeship railway link between Sucha Beskidzka and Żywiec.
The PLN 360 million (EUR 84.3 million) design and construction contract has been awarded to Strabag and is financed through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (KPO).
Under the contract, 35 km of tracks as well as the traction network and railway traffic control devices will be reconstructed. To improve the standards of the line and make travel safer, PKP PLK planned the renovation of 90 culverts and 55 rail-road crossings in five towns.
The project will provide passengers with better accessibility through the modernisation of platforms at nine stations and stops. The rebuilt facilities will ensure convenient service for all travellers, including people with limited mobility.
Touch paths and warning strips will facilitate communication. A better level of passenger service will also be ensured by equipping the stops with new shelters, benches, information boards, as well as signage and lighting.
The Sucha Beskidzka – Żywiec railway route is a part of line No. 97 Skawina – Żywiec. The Małopolska section of line No. 97 between Skawina and Sucha Beskidzka was modernised as part of a larger investment project on the Zakopane railway line. The result of the work is new opportunities for passengers and a better standard in regional and long-distance rail travel, including to Podhale (Polish Highlands, country’s southernmost region).
“We will make this railway line located in the picturesque area of southern Poland more attractive to passengers. For residents of the Sucha and Żywiec counties, this project means more convenient commuting options to work and school, including in Krakow and for tourists provides new and more interesting travel offers from the capital of Lesser Poland to the Beskid Żywiecki, and from the Silesian Voivodeship to the Tatra Mountains,” Przemysław Koperski, Deputy Minister of Infrastructure said.
This contract allows the continuation of modernisation, which will now cover the route connecting the Lesser Poland Voivodeship with the Silesian Voivodeship, between Sucha Beskidzka and Żywiec.
The modernisation of Lesser Poland – Silesian voivodeship railway connection will result in shorter journeys, greater comfort and safety, improving transport connectivity in the region.
