Mexico City-Toluca interurban line, currently under construction, reached a milestone as the first of two Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) broke through the 4.7-km ‘Vía derecha’ two-tube tunnel.
The project started in 2015 and currently is more than 80 per cent completed, and next September train tests will be started on Zinacantepec – Santa Fe rail section and the civil works will be completed in November, Transport and Communications Ministry said.
EUR 1.8 billion (Peso 44 billion) was the initial cost of the project, but taking into account the inflation and other factors, the project is estimated at EUR 2 billion (Peso 52 billion).
“The final stretch, which is already under construction, is 57 km-long, of which almost 50 km are over viaducts of different types. Each viaduct will have a solution adapted to its location along the route, allowing the line to cross the Sierra de las Cruces conservation area while guaranteeing total respect for the environment,” General Manager of Infrastructures and Transport, César Quevedo said.
The Mexico City-Toluca line will be operated by 30 five-car EMUs supplied by CAF, as part of a consortium including Isolux-Corsán, AZVI and Thales.
The 58-km six-station line will link the cities of Toluca and Mexico City with an end-to-end journey time of 30 minutes, providing transport services to 300,000 passengers per day, and, according to estimations, by 2047 the number of passenger will increase to 500,000 per day.
