Mexico to launch new passenger rail lines by 2027

The Mexican government, through the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation (SICT), has announced plans to commence construction of the Mexico-Querétaro and Mexico-Pachuca passenger rail lines in April 2025. The initiative is part of a broader effort to reactivate passenger train services across the country, with both routes expected to be operational by 2027.

SICT has confirmed that the bidding process for both projects will take place before April 2025, with an estimated construction period of two years. Additionally, the government plans to open tenders for the Querétaro-Irapuato and Saltillo-Nuevo Laredo sections in June and July 2025, respectively, with construction work set to follow shortly thereafter.

As part of this initiative, SICT is conducting demand studies, environmental impact assessments, and basic engineering analyses to ensure the feasibility and sustainability of these projects.

The new passenger trains will operate on dedicated tracks, designed to optimize service efficiency and reliability. While some sections may feature single or double tracks, the infrastructure will be separate from existing freight rail lines to prevent operational conflicts.

With these projects, the Mexican government aims to expand transportation options, improve connectivity between key regions, and enhance mobility for passengers. The initiative represents a significant step in revitalizing Mexico’s rail network, providing an alternative mode of transport to complement existing road and air travel options.
