Ontario transport agency, Metrolinx, has announced that major portion of the new elevated guideway of Hazel McCallion LRT (previously known as Hurontario LRT) are completed.
The elevated section stretching over Highway 403 is an outstanding feature of the Hazel McCallion Line. The bridge will connect the future City Centre stop at Rathburn Road and the Robert Speak stop at Hurontario Street, providing easy access to a core area of the city.
Metrolinx project teams successfully installed the final elevated guideway girders last fall, serving as a backbone that will support the weight of trains crossing over the highway on the future Hazel McCallion LRT.
Now that the structure’s foundation is in place, crews will focus on building the bridge deck – the flat surface where the future LRT tracks will be installed. A specialised concrete screed machine is used to ensure concrete is poured with precision and efficiency.
The Hazel McCallion Line is a brand-new transit line being built in Peel Region, the second largest municipality in Ontario with a population of more than 1.4 million people.
The 18 km line will run along Hurontario Street from Port Credit GO Station to Steeles Avenue in Brampton. The new transit system will feature 19 stations and stops including four major transit hubs. It will travel through two urban growth centres and connect to six major transit and rail connections including GO Transit – the Milton and Lakeshore West lines, the Mississauga Transitway, Brampton Transit, ZUM and MiWay. The Hazel McCallion Line will operate in its own dedicated infrastructure ensuring a smooth, reliable and convenient ride along the region’s busiest street.
As Mississauga and Brampton expands with new residents, businesses and amenities, sustainable and reliable transit becomes vital. The Hazel McCallion Line will operate with clean, electrically powered light rail vehicles, producing near zero emissions. The new line will reduce the number of cars providing passengers a sustainable, environmentally offer to travel.
