60 M8 rail cars will be purchased for the New Haven Line operated by Metro-North Railroad. The announcement was made by Governor Dannel P. Malloy and Connecticut Department of Transportation Commissioner James P. Redeker. Of the 60 new rail cars, 10 will be bar cars.
The contract is estimated at $308 million, $200 million of which will be paid by state-issued bonds. The rest will be paid by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority of New York. The 60 new M8 cars will be added to the current fleet of 405, each of which costs $3.85 million, according to the DOT. The rest of the value is made up of consultant, engineering, inspection costs, salaries and benefits and a 15 percent contingency fund.
