Metro de Panamá has launched an invitation to companies interested in a contract to carry out a study prior to the extension of the network with lines four and five. The study will have to examine all factors of physical, socioeconomic and urban development of the lines and places in which the new stations should be placed.
The project of Metro Panama is part of a General Plan to build an eight-line network that should be completed in 2040. According to the plan, Line 4 will connect with Pedregal Punta Pacifica and Line 5 will connect Costa del Este with Obarrio.
The master plan foresees the completion of Panama’s large metropolitan project by 2040, a year in which the eight-lane metro network and some ninety stations should be built to provide transportation to the country’s capital and its entire metropolitan area, including San Miguelito, Arraiján and La Chorrera.
Panama opened the first section of its current metro network in April 2014 with the entry into service of Line 1, almost 14 kilometers in length, between Los Andes and Albrook. In 2015 the section between Los Andes and San Isidro, a little more than 2 kilometers long, was added to the network. Also in 2015 began the construction of metro Line 2, twenty-one kilometers, between San Miguelito de San Antonio and Hospital del Este. The forecast is that this line enters service in 2019.
