Melbourne Airport Rail project is back on track

The first stage of the Melbourne Airport Rail project is set to begin soon, with significant changes planned for the rail network around Sunshine Station. These upgrades will enable the new rail line to the airport and lay the groundwork for the future electrification of the line to Melton.

Spanning over 6km from West Footscray to Albion, the project will involve the construction of two new dedicated regional platforms and an extended concourse at Sunshine Station. Other key elements include the development of three new rail bridges, the installation of new and upgraded tracks, the implementation of advanced signalling technology, and the realignment of both passenger and freight lines to improve this busy section of the rail network.

These upgrades are essential not only for establishing a direct rail link to Melbourne Airport but also for facilitating future infrastructure developments in the west, such as the electrification of the line to Melton. The improvements will ensure that Sunshine Station can accommodate over 40 train services per hour, significantly boosting capacity for both local and airport-bound services.

By undertaking these works now, the Victorian Government aims to minimise future disruptions and smooth the way for the electrification project to Melton.

In addition to the upgrades around Sunshine Station, the project will also deliver a new, modern Albion Station, featuring an accessible concourse with lifts and stairs.

Design and planning for the project are progressing, with work expected to commence in early 2026 and be completed by 2030.

Connecting Melbourne Airport to Victoria’s rail network

The Melbourne Airport Rail service will connect the airport to Victoria’s regional and metropolitan rail network. Trains will run directly from Melbourne Airport through to Sunshine Station, before entering the Metro Tunnel and continuing on to the CBD, and further on to the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines.

This new rail service will provide the first-ever direct connection from the airport to various destinations across the city, including key work, residential, and tourism areas.

Melbourne Airport Rail is a vital component of the Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) project, a new orbital rail line that will link Cheltenham to Werribee.
