Mechel produced pilot rails for high-speed lines

Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant, part of Mechel Group, has produced a pilot batch of rails for high-speed lines which will be certified during this year.
The rails have high performance quality, including resistance to wear and durability, due to an innovative technology of hardening rails in an organic polymer solution.
The mill produces high-quality structural shapes-beams and rails up to 100 meters in length.
Since its launch in 2012, the mill produced over 50 profiles of shapes from various steel grades, including four types of rails. In 2017 the plant produced a total of 635,000 tonnes of products, which is 23% higher than the previous year. This includes 357,000 tonnes of rails, with 330,000 tonnes sold to Russian Railways, and 278,000 tonnes of beams.
Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant’s rails are supplied to Russian Railways and in 2017, rail supplies to the company increased by 22% y-o-y. RZD is company’s key customer and rails produced at the mill are being supplied under the Development Strategy for Russian Railway Transport until 2030. The two companies signed a contract for annual rail supplies of up to 400,000 tonnes until 2030.
The plant’s rails were also used for Moscow Metro’s tracks and industrial areas of major companies, as well as exported to Belarus and Kazakhstan.
