Mayan Train first section inaugurated

Mayan Train first sectionThe President of Mexico Andrés Manuel López Obrador has inaugurated Mayan Train first section between Campeche and Cancún, on a 554 km line “built in a record time”, by Mota-Engil, Carso, Azvindi, ICA and Alstom.

“This great work is the product of civil and railway engineering, but, above all, because of the participation of 100,000 construction workers from all over the country. The project was also possible to complete thanks to the compliance of Grupo Carso, Mota-Engil, INDI, ICA, companies that took charge of various sections, as well as Alstom, in charge of manufacturing the trains in Ciudad Sahagún,” the President said.

The Mayan Train first section crosses through 14 stations providing connections to the inhabitants of Campeche, Yucatán and Quintana Roo. The works included the installation of 846 km of rails and 1,6 million of sleepers, as well as the construction of two depots in Teya and Hampolol, in Campeche and two maintenance facilities in Teya and Valladolid.

Mayan Train project consists of a 1,554 km rail system connecting southeast of the country with the Yucatán Peninsula, crossing the states of Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán and Quintana Roo. The system will be operated by 42 X’trapolis trains (219 cars) built by Alstom. In June 2021, the consortium made up of Alstom Transport Mexico, Bombardier Transportation México, Gami Ingeniería e Instalaciones and Construcciones Urales Procesos Industriales was awarded a EUR 1.3 billion contract for Mayan Train. The consortium led by Alstom-Bombardier is responsible for the design, manufacture and commissioning of 42 X’trapolis trains, as well as the full signalling system including the design, supply and installation of the ETCS onboard technology and over 1,500 km of trackside equipment including ETCS, interlocking, traffic management and telecommunications systems.

The first 4 cars form the first of the 31 Xiinbal type of trains were delivered in July 2023 and the entire train fleet will be delivered in the last quarter of 2024. The consortium will offer the X’trapolis in three distinct configurations: the first in a flexible and comfortable standard service set-up (Xiinbal); the second prioritising restaurant cars (Janal); and the last in long-distance sleeper configuration (P’atal). The train fleet is manufactured at Alstom’s Ciudad Sahagún Hidalgo plant.
