MÁV plans to lease 15 diesel locomotives

The MÁV-VOLÁN group plans to lease 15 good condition, reliable diesel locomotives manufactured by the German company Henschel from a Swedish leasing company. The first diesel locomotive will arrive in Hungary at the end of July. The locomotives are expected to be put into service in the fall after the technical transformation and successful authorization procedure.

In order to alleviate the increasing demand for travel and the lack of vehicles, the railway company is also working continuously – as a short-term, temporary solution – on the commissioning of used vehicles that can be rented permanently.

Similar to the use of Siemens Eurosprinter electric locomotives rented from AKIEM since last fall, the fleet of MÁV-START and MÁV Rail Tours can be expanded with additional used vehicles.

MÁV wants to lease 15 locomotives from Henschel

The railway company plans to use 15 good condition, reliable diesel locomotives manufactured by the German company Henschel from a Swedish leasing company.

The Henschel TMe series diesel locomotives were previously used by the Danish State Railways (DSB) in long-distance InterCity traffic, from where they entered the stock of the Nordic ReFinance company. MÁV Rail Tours, a subsidiary of the MÁV-VOLÁN group, signs a contract with the Swedish company. MÁV-START uses the locomotives within the framework of the effective cooperation agreement with MÁV Rail Tours Kft.

The towing vehicles are in good technical condition. Their reliability far exceeds that of the current stock, according to the current owners of the locomotives, their availability index is exceptionally high. Their state-of-the-art turbocharged diesel engine was manufactured by General Motors, and their emissions are also more favorable than our own diesel locomotives. The driver’s cab is ergonomic and air-conditioned, and it is equipped with a rearview camera system that helps the driver’s work.

After their arrival, the locomotives will receive the external foiling corresponding to the new image, and they will also be equipped with the train influencing equipment (EVM) and the on-board equipment (MFB) regularized on MÁV-START locomotives, which are necessary for safe traffic.

The locomotives can arrive after the first locomotive has been licensed and put into service, and it is expected that they will be in service by the end of the year, after their conversion. From autumn, our passengers can see them at the front of the trains, mainly on high-passenger trains in Western Hungary.

The goal of the MÁV-VOLÁN group is to put additional used vehicles and of course new locomotives and trains into service in the near future through the implementation of the group’s vehicle strategy.
