Hungarian state-owned railway company MÁV is planning to spend HUF 6-7 billion (EUR 19 – 22 million) on linking some railway lines around Budapest, in order to ease up traffic at the capitalʼs Western Railway Station – Nyugati, one of the busiest stations in the city.
The construction of a railway around the city would mean restoring a service that the city has not had for approximately 60 years.
MÁV hopes to receive European Union funding for the investment, which is expected to be launched in 2018, after the designs are completed in 2017.
MÁV told the local media that negotiations have already been carried out with the authorities of the related areas, as well as with the Budapest Transport Center (BKK).
