MÁV needs 460 new trains over the next decade

hungary-trainsHungary’s Minister of State István Lepsényi from the Ministry of National Economy has announced that MÁV will require 450-460 new trains over the next ten years, most of which will also be used on international lines, the acquisition of which is estimated at some EUR 450-480 million (HUF 140-150 billion).
Over the next three years, Hungary will need almost EUR 48 million to manufacture and test train prototypes. ‘Some HUF 14-15 billion (EUR 45-48 million) will be required over the next three years to manufacture and test prototypes. MÁV will require 450-460 new trains over the next ten years, which is estimated at some HUF 140-150 billion (EUR 450-480 million).
The modernization of transport fleet and existing services are key issues of the Transport Development Plan 2025.
In 2015, the European Commission approved more than EUR 220 million under the Cohesion Fund for acquisition of rolling stock to be put into service on the regional traffic lines in Hungary. The total amount of the project is in excess of EUR 260 million and covers the acquisition of 53 train expected to run on the routes that connect Budapest to Esztergom, to Veresegyház and Vác, to Vác and Szob, to Monor and Cegléd, to Székesfehérvár, and to Pusztaszabolcs.
Earlier, Hungary and Russia started talks concerning construction of rolling stock including metro trains, trams and trains. In early 2015, MÁV-Start, the national passenger operator, selected Stadler Bussnang to supply 21 EMUs for the suburban services in Budapest.
