MARTA outlines vision for the future of Atlanta’s transit system

The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) has outlined an ambitious plan to modernise and expand metro Atlanta’s transit system to meet the region’s growing transportation needs. During the State of MARTA event, officials detailed key infrastructure projects aimed at improving service reliability, sustainability, and passenger experience as the city prepares for a projected population increase from 6 million to 8 million by 2050.

MARTA General Manager and CEO Collie Greenwood introduced the first CQ400 train at Lindbergh Station, offering a preview of the next-generation railcars set to enter service later this year. These new vehicles feature open gangway designs, enhanced seating, digital displays, onboard charging stations, and upgraded safety measures.

“When I stepped onto that new train this morning, it felt like stepping into the future,” said Greenwood. “These new railcars represent MARTA’s commitment to providing a cleaner, safer, and more efficient transit experience for our riders.”

MARTA’s strong financial position has been a key factor in advancing these initiatives. In 2023, Fitch Ratings upgraded MARTA’s bond rating to AA+, while Kroll and S&P reaffirmed its AAA rating, underscoring the agency’s financial stability.

System upgrades and expansion projects at MARTA

Greenwood highlighted several major initiatives aimed at modernizing MARTA’s infrastructure and improving overall service, including:

  • CQ400 Railcars: The new state-of-the-art trains will begin testing this year and feature modernized interiors, improved accessibility, and enhanced safety features.
  • Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC): This advanced signaling system will improve rail safety, efficiency, and reliability.
  • Zero-Emissions Vehicles: The new MARTA Rapid Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) fleet, featuring wireless charging and ADA-friendly platforms, will debut this year along the Summerhill corridor.
  • NextGen Bus Network: A redesigned bus system will expand frequent service routes from five to 18 corridors, increasing 15-minute service coverage by 245%. The plan also includes consistent seven-day service and 12 on-demand transit zones.
  • Fare Payment Upgrades: The AFC 2.0 system will allow riders to use credit cards, smartphones, and smartwatches for seamless payments, while upgraded faregates will enhance security and accessibility.

Beyond infrastructure improvements, MARTA is prioritizing passenger safety, accessibility, and convenience through several initiatives:

  • Safety Enhancements: MARTA is implementing new security measures, including a real-time crime center, joint bike patrols, and an expanded police presence.
  • Transit-Oriented Development (TOD): Developments such as Marchon at King Memorial and Quill at Candler Park are transforming station areas into walkable, mixed-use communities. Future projects at Indian Creek and Kensington will further expand these efforts.
  • Technology Upgrades: A redesigned MARTA app, real-time train arrival updates, and improved station information screens will provide riders with more accurate and accessible travel information.

MARTA is undergoing its largest expansion in decades, with several projects underway:

  • New MARTA Rapid Lines: Construction on the Summerhill BRT line is progressing, with additional routes planned for Campbellton Road, Southlake, and SR-54.
  • Transit Hubs: New facilities in Clayton County, South DeKalb, and Stonecrest will enhance connectivity for bus passengers.
  • Station Modernization: MARTA is investing $1 billion to upgrade all 38 rail stations, with a major redevelopment of Five Points Station planned to create a central transit hub.

Preparing for future growth

Greenwood also highlighted MARTA’s workforce development initiatives, including its partnership with Cristo Rey High School and an apprenticeship program for bus technicians. These programs aim to build a skilled workforce to support the agency’s ongoing expansion.

As Atlanta prepares to host major global events such as the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Super Bowl, MARTA’s investments will be crucial in providing efficient transportation for residents and visitors alike.

“The future is now, and it’s happening at MARTA,” said MARTA Board Chair Jennifer Ide. “We are expanding, modernizing, and improving service to meet the needs of our growing region. Together, we’re building a more connected future for metro Atlanta.”
