The Turkish Transport Ministry has a budget of TL 2 billion (EUR 614 million) in 2016 for railway investments. 70% of this budget, TL 1.4 billion (EUR 430 million) is allocated for Marmaray project.
The project needs TL 3.5 billion (EUR 1.07 billion) to be completed and is expected to be commissioned by the end of 2017.
Marmaray project will connect Gebze in Asian side to Halkali in European side for suburban service. The project will also enable railway connection between Europe and Asia for passenger and freight trains.
The modernization of the 63-km-long surface lines was planned, but the project stopped for two years, in the absence of the needed financing.
