Witold Kozłowski, the Marshal of the Małopolska Region, and the Łukasz Smółka, the Vice-Marshal of the Małopolskie, signed with Newag a contract for the supply of 7 four-car Impuls 2 trains with an option for two additional trains and spare parts. The contract also includes the provisioning of the maintenance and repair services for a period of 5 years. PLN 245 (EUR 54.92 million) is the value of the contract which has received European co-financing through the European Regional Development Fund.
The first two electric trains are expected to be delivered within 16 months from the date of the signing contract, while the last vehicle will be delivered within 22 months.
“The purchase of new trains will make possible to supplement the current fleet while providing increased comfort and enabling the development of the transport offer in the scope of new connections. We put great emphasis on the growing importance of the rail transport in public transport sector and we are extremely pleased that there are more and more passengers choosing on our trains,” Marshal Witold Kozłowski said.
Under the agreement, Newag will also provide a license for software and technical documentation, training of the operator’s employees and a guarantee.
The Impuls 2 trains will be adapted to the passengers with reduced mobility being equipped with ramp devices and automatic lifts enabling a fast entry and exit of these passengers. The new trains will have facilities for children and pregnant women, as well as for seniors and will offer large areas for heavy luggage and bicycles. All adopted solutions meet the required standards, maintain passenger comfort and safety while considering the environmental issues.
When designing the new EMU, driver’s cab has been 100% subordinated to work ergonomics. A specially designed desktop extended around the driver’s seat allows driver to see objects near the front of the train.
The new trains will be used to provide services in the agglomeration railway connections operated by Koleje Małopolskie and PolRegio. They will be deployed by 2022 on three routes served by Koleje Małopolskie and one route served by PolRegio, linking Kraków and Katowice.
Currently, Małopolska Region has a fleet of 29 EMUs serving the railway routes in the agglomerations. Newag has delivered 19 trains for the region. The 100th Impuls train manufactured in 2017 was delivered to Koleje Małopolskie and “there is a good chance to deliver the 200th trains by next year,” said Zbigniew Konieczek, the president of Newag.
