Malaysia awards USD 4 billion underground works contract

KV-MRTMalaysia’s Mass Rapid Transit Corporation (MRT Corp) awarded MMC Gamuda KVMRT  (MGKT) a USD 3.97 billion contract for the construction of Sungai Buloh-Serdang-Putrajaya (SSP) Line. This is the largest work package for the construction of the SSP Line.
The contract involves the design, construction and completion of tunnels, underground stations and associated structures such as portals and escape shafts for the SSP Line’s 13.5 km underground alignment from the Jalan Ipoh North Esscape Shaft to the Desa Waterpark South Portal.
This award is the third major civil an infrastructure works package to be awarded for the SSP Line. Earlier Work Package for 4.5km of elevated guideway had been awarded to Ahmad Zaki Sdn Bhd; and Work Package for 4.9 km stretch of elevated alignment was awarded to Sunway Construction Sdn Bhd.
The SPP Line is 52.2 km in length, of which 13.5 km will run underground. It will have 37 stations, 11 of them underground. At commencement of full service in the second quarter of 2022, the SSP Line is expected to have a ridership of 533,000 passengers per day. This is expected to further improve the chronic traffic congestion currently faced by Kuala Lumpur.
The line is included in Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit (KVMRT) Project that involves the construction of a urban rail network comprising three lines. The first MRT line to be implemented is the 51 km SBK Line. Construction of the line began on 8 July 2011.
MGKT was one of five companies shortlisted during a pre-qualification excercise carried out in June 2015. The other four shortlisted companies were China Railway Group Limited (CREC), China Communications Construction Company Limited, Taisei Corporation and Hyundai Engineering and Construction Co Ltd. Only MGKT, CREC and China Communications Construction Company Limited submitted tenders.
