Madrid Metro invests over EUR 100 million in platform doors

The Community of Madrid will invest EUR 100.7 million in the installation of platform doors in all stations on Metro line 6 as part of its process of automating this public transport system.

This is an essential element to make it the first underground line to introduce automation. The Ministry of Housing, Transport and Infrastructure chose L6 because it is the most used of the entire network, with more than 90 million journeys recorded in the first six months of the year.

In total, work will be carried out on the 70 platforms, totalling 6.4 kilometres, with the aim of using these doors to separate the waiting area for passengers from the area where trains circulate, guaranteeing safe and orderly entry to the vehicle. They will be transparent to ensure visibility at all times and to offer a greater feeling of spaciousness.

From an operational point of view, it will make it possible to increase the regularity of the service and the transport capacity, avoiding delays associated with users and increasing the speed of arrival of the convoys to put one into circulation up to every two minutes. In addition, it will ensure that unauthorized access to the tunnels is blocked and the track area is kept clean.

The contract will be awarded in the last quarter of this year and work is expected to begin next June, along with the comprehensive track renovation work that will allow for automated train traffic.

Metro de Madrid carried out an in-depth market study and an exhaustive analysis of the peculiarities and needs of travellers, with the aim of choosing the best solution, which has finally resulted in a conceptual design with significant advantages in terms of accessibility and customer information.

The installation will allow users to know the status of each entrance through different colours, making it easier for them to know which one to go to in order to gain access correctly. They will also have screen printing, security bars and anti-entrapment elements and will be built with anti-vandal components.

This new system offers benefits that go beyond speed, as it has integrated LED screens with useful communications and an understandable and visible response, which improves the connection when accessing the carriage. They will be at the top of the infrastructure and the information offered will range from the waiting time for the next trains to a map of the route.

These platform doors are a complex piece of equipment that will involve not only the physical construction and location, but also the intervention in the railway signalling and power line assemblies, as well as in the verification and communications with the Control Post.
