The Community of Madrid is set to invest EUR 36.6 million in maintaining the Metro network’s stations, tunnels, depots, and various facilities. The underground transport system has initiated the tendering process for these contracts, which will run for four years from the date of award, aiming to ensure the highest standards for users.
The regional government considers these Madrid metro maintenance activities—both preventive and corrective—essential to providing high-quality public transport while minimising disruptions to operations. The routine tasks will encompass more than 8,000 different activities, including the cleaning and upkeep of ventilation grilles and access covers.
The maintenance efforts will cover the entire Madrid network, which spans 300 kilometres and includes 302 stations, alongside auxiliary infrastructure such as over 1,000 ventilation shafts, 300 pumping shafts, and 200 emergency exits.
The plan also includes upkeep for 100 substations, 13 depots and garages, as well as the underground Command Post and other operational centres.
Additionally, the contract will cover architectural and structural maintenance tasks, including masonry, stonework, metalwork, glasswork, painting, plumbing, sanitation, waterproofing, and well drilling.
In 2024, the Community of Madrid has broken the historical record of Metro users with a total of 715,208,882 trips, 8% more than last year with 662,307,878, even exceeding the activity prior to the pandemic. In fact, 38 million more trips have been made than in 2019 and 27 more than in 2007, the year that had, until now, the highest number of transits recorded.
