Akiem Group has finalised the transaction on the acquisition of Macquarie European Rail, following the approval by the competent authorities.
“We are very proud to have finalised the acquisition of Macquarie European Rail. We’re very pleased to welcome the Macquarie European Rail teams to help serve all our customers and support their development around Europe,” Fabien Rochefort, Akiem Group CEO, said.
The transaction involves 137 locomotives operated by 21 freight and passenger rail operators in Europe, including the UK, 30 electric multiple unit trains leased to the Greater Anglia franchise in the UK, 16 diesel multiple unit trains leased to a Dutch franchise, and 110 wagons.
In February, the Akiem Group has entered a definitive agreement to acquire the rolling stock leasing business of Macquarie European Rail.
This acquisition consolidates Akiem Group’s position as European leader in locomotive leasing.
Akiem’s expansion has been supported by the acquisition of mgw Service in 2017, a leading European maintenance company and the consolidation of a network of European local representatives and a comprehensive maintenance network.
Through the latest acquisition, Akiem currently owns the continent’s biggest fleet. It is comprising a diverse portfolio of more than 600 locomotives operated by 65 companies in the whole Europe. Through this transaction, Akiem Group diversifies its product offering by positioning itself in the passenger train leasing market and strengthens its expertise to meet the needs of operators and transport authorities across Europe and in France in particular.
Since 2016, Akiem Group has invested in more than 200 locomotives, the delivery of which is in progress, with the final locomotive expected in 2021.
In 2018, Akiem ordered 20 additional Traxx DC3 locomotives under a contract for a total fleet of 33 Traxx AC, DC and MS locomotives that will operate in Poland and Central Europe. Through this procurement programme, Akiem is able to lease a fleet of 55 locomotives in Poland for freight and passenger traffic.
