On January 26, the French Senate definitively adopted the bill, approved by the National Assembly after the accelerated procedure, authorizing the agreement between the Government of the French Republic and the Government of the Italian Republic for the final work on the cross-border section of the new Lyon-Turin railway line.
With an estimated value of about EUR 26 billion, the project is envisaged to be funded by the European Union at 40%, with the remaining 60% split between France (42.1%) and Italy (57.9%).
The 220 km/h high speed line will service both passengers and freight. The 57-km tunnel under the Alps will be longer than the Channel Tunnel, while the line as a whole will shorten the trip between Milan and Paris by train from 7 to 4 hours.
The French-Italian TELT (Tunnel Euralpin Lyon-Turin) company, chosen to execute the trans-border section of the line, said that it is ready to move ahead with the construction procedures for the tunnel.
The line is expected to open in 2028 or 2029, reducing Lyon – Turin journey times from 3h 30min to 1h 47min.
We remind you that The Italian Senate approved, in November 2016, the draft law of ratification and execution of the agreement to launch the final works of the cross-border section of Lyon-Turin
