L&T wins another contract for Chennai metro phase 2

Larsen & Toubro was awarded another contract for Chennai Metro Rail covering the Package C3 of the Phase two of the project. This includes the construction of an elevated viaduct of approximately 10 km including an elevated ramp and 10 elevated metro stations.

The construction of the elevated section is expected to be completed within 35 months.

L&T is already executing four packages of Chennai Metro Rail Phase II of which one is underground and the other three are elevated packages. L&T had earlier executed construction works for the Phase I of Chennai Metro Rail.

The second phase of the metro project includes three metro corridors. The Corridor 3 will be 45.8 km long with 50 stations from Madhavaram to Sipcot. This latest contract awarded to Larsen & Toubro represents the central section of this Corridor. The Corridor 4 will be 26.1 km long with 29 stations from Lighthouse to Poonamallee Bypass.

The Corridor 5 is the third line which will be 47 km long with 41 stations from  Madahvaram to Sholinganallur. This line will be built into tow distinct sections. One secrion will start at Sholinganallur station, on the Corridor 3, towards Mugalivakka station. From here, it will have common line with the corridor 4 and from Alwarthiru Nagar station, the section will be connected to the Madhavaram station, on the Corridor 3.

The phase two of the project is expected to become operational in 2025 and in 2028 the entire sections will be put into commercial operation.
