Lokaltog awards battery train tender

Lokaltog, which is part of the traffic company Movia, and which operates nine local trains in Zealand and Lolland-Falster, has chosen the train supplier that will supply 14 battery trains that are expected to run on Lokaltog’s routes in Region Zealand.

Lokaltog published in November 2023 a tender for 14 battery trains with an option for a further 10 trains according to Region Zealand’s requirements and wishes for the trains. Three European train suppliers were pre-qualified to tender, namely Construcciones Y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF) SA, Siemens Mobility A/S and Stadler Bussnang AG.

In the first half of 2024, Lokaltog carried out tenders with negotiation, and at the end of the tender deadline on 4 June 2024 received final offers from all three bidders, which shows great interest in the tender.

Evaluation of the three offers

The evaluation of the three tenders showed that two out of three suppliers have given conditional tenders, which means that they are in accordance with the tender conditions, including meeting all set minimum requirements. The third supplier has submitted a final offer with reservations, which means that Lokaltog is both entitled and obliged not to take the offer from this supplier into consideration.

After an in-depth technical and legal review, the offers from CAF and Stadler Bussnang AG were judged to be suitable. Both suppliers have delivered attractive offers, and they have been in close competition.

Lokaltog awards battery train tender to Stadler

Based on the criteria of the tender, Lokaltog has awarded the delivery of 14 battery trains with an option for a further 10 trains to Stadler Bussnang AG, on the condition that the agreement is subsequently approved by Region Zealand’s Regional Council in September 2024.

Stadler Bussnang AG has extensive experience in producing high-tech trains for the whole of Europe, and has already produced over 2,000 electric trains and over 400 battery trains, the first of which have already been commissioned in Germany.

“At Lokaltog, we are delighted that we have found a supplier for our future battery trains. The battery trains will replace our IC2 trains which have served us well since 1997. Stadler’s offer was marginally better than what CAF provided. These are the trains of the future that we are now buying, and they will hopefully run on our tracks for many years and bring joy to our customers”, says Lars Wrist-Elkjær, managing director of Lokaltog.

Lokaltog expects to enter into a final contract with Stadler Bussnang AG in October 2024, after approval from Region Zealand.
