In Lithuania, the development of a plan for the electrification of the railway line from Kaisiadorys to Klaipeda (Vilnius-Klaipeda route), as well as the Vilnius and Klaipeda railway junctions, will soon begin.
The length of the railway section to be electrified is 377 km. The section from Vilnius to Kaisiadorys is already electrified.
Lithuanian Transport Ministry explained that the electrification will be carried out in three stages: the first is planned to electrify the Vilnius railway junction (Kiviškės-Vaidotai-Valčiūnai-Panyaryai section and Vilnius-Kirtimai-Valčiūnai sections); in the third, from Radviliskis to the Klaipeda station Draugiste.
It is planned to allocate EUR 349 million for the project, of which EUR 224 million is the investment of the EU Cohesion Fund, the remaining funds belong to Lietuvos gelezinkeliai (Lithuanian Railways).
Lietuvos gelezinkeliai announced a tender for the electrification of the Vilnius railway junction and the Kaišiadorys-Klaipėda section, but the contractor has not yet been selected.
According to the Ministry of Transport, by 2022, Lithuania plans to electrify the entire line crossing the territory of the country in the East-West direction from the Lithuanian-Belarusian border to Klaipeda. More than 3/4 of all cargo and 2/3 of passengers will be transported by electrified railway.
