Metropolitano do Lisboa initiates the public consultation process for Metro Sul do Tejo extension project Costa da Caparica and Trafaria.
This phase of public participation comes after the completion of the first studies of the expansion plan for Line 3 of the Metro Sul do Tejo, designed by the working group formed by Transportes Metropolitanos de Lisboa, the Municipality of Almada and the Lisbon Metro.
The route under study for the extension of line 3 of the Metro Sul do Tejo will be 7.16 km long, including 10 stations connecting NOVA FCT Campus to the Trafaria River station. The journey is estimated at 19 minutes along the extension providing passengers connectivity to the city’s public transport system.
The project also includes the requalification of public spaces, as well as the creation of a route dedicated to active mobility – pedestrian and cycling – linked to the connections planned for the Municipal Cycling Network.
In July 2024, the three institutions signed an agreement to develop the technical studies for the expansion project to Costa da Caparica and Trafaria, especially identifying project’ purpose, costs, phasing and the alignment of the route.
Under the agreement, Lisbon Metro is responsible for project management, while the Almada City Council will be responsible for establishing the conditions of line’s access the territory under its administrative supervision and Lisbon Metropolitan Transport will ensure the coordination and management of the expansion project, covering studies on traffic and demand, as well as the harmonisation and integration of public transport options with other modes of transport and fares in the context of the Lisbon metropolitan area.
The Almada City Council will be responsible for establishing the conditions for the urban insertion of the new route, in the territory under its administrative supervision, particularly in terms of harmonization with the urban areas covered by the new section.
The construction work is expected to begin in five years.
Metro Sul do Tejo extension aims to guarantee regional connectivity significantly improving public transport system while reducing the dependence of individual transport and responds to Portugal’s commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
