Latvian Government has announced that it will support the electrification of Daugavpils-Krustpils-Riga railway line.
Transport Minister Uldis Augulis said that the electrification project will increase the competitiveness of the railway corridors and will allow operators to develop their business. “Given the trends in rail freight transport, the electrification will start in the direction of Riga. The project will be a significant investment in the sector and the country’s economic growth, as well as a serious contribution to the Latgale region development, ” the minister said.
“In the long term, this project will certainly create additional revenue for the state budget and promote the development of the sector, as well as to increase our competitiveness in relation to other transit corridors,” Latvian Railways President Edvins Berzins said.
The value of the first phase of the project is EUR 519 million, of which EUR 347 million is the EU co-financing under Cohesion Fund, for the 2014-2020 planning period.
Latvian railway network electrification as an important project included in the National Development Plan 2014- 2020 and the Transport Development Guidelines for the same period.
The total length of Latvian railway network is 1859 km of which 248 km are electrified.
