MPK Kraków signed with Solaris Bus & Coach and Stadler Polska joint venture the framework agreement for the delivery of 35 new trams, with an additional option of 15 trams. The framework agreement covers 50 trams. The value of the contract on the supply of 35 trams is PLN 314 million (EUR 75 million). Under the Operational Programme Infrastructure and Environment 2014–2020, the project receives a PLN 125 million (EUR 29.9 million) co-financing. The first new trams are estimated to be put into operation at the beginning of 2020 and in the third quarter of 2020 all trams should be delivered.
“The contract for the supply of 35 trams was signed by the MPK SA to launch the ninth EU project. The value of all EU projects implemented by the public transport operator is already over PLN 1.6 billion [EUR 382.64 million], of which almost PLN 1 billion [EUR 23.9 million] are funds raised from EU,” Rafał Świerczyński, General Manager of MPK S.A. said after signing the contract.
“The agreement signed will increase city’s tram fleet. The new trams will enable us to reduce the number of older trams, with high floor and, as a result, the low-floor trams fleet will increase improving the availability and comfort of traveling in Krakow, especially for the elderly, the disabled and parents traveling with young children. New trams are needed in Kraków because we are constantly developing the tram infrastructure as this year we plan the construction of Krowodrza Górki – Górki Narodowa line,” the Mayor of Krakow, Jacek Majchrowski said.
The new trams will have a length of 33.4 meters, with wider doors than the existing trams (1.4m), and they will be equipped with air conditioning, monitoring, LED interior lighting and a modern passenger information system.
They will be fitted with energy storage systems enabling energy saving.
The Solaris Bus & Coach and Stadler joint venture was established in 2017 under the name of Solaris Tram Sp. z o.o. and operates a plant in Środa (a town in central Poland), where tram car bodies are to be produced and painted. The JV was established to participate at tenders in Poland and in other Central European countries; Stadler Polska and Solaris Tram will bid together as a consortium led by Stadler.
