Knorr-Bremse is ranked in the top five percent of all companies assessed and rated for sustainability by rating agency EcoVadis and the company was awarded Gold status for this year’s sustainability performance.
“Climate action is at the heart of our ecological efforts, simply because playing a leading role in environmental protection and ongoing decarbonisation is a key part of Knorr-Bremse’s long-term strategy,” Frank Markus Weber, Executive Board Spokesperson and Chief Financial Officer of Knorr-Bremse AG said.
As part of Knorr-Bremse’s Climate Strategy 2030, last year it had achieved carbon neutrality across all of its sites and is on track to halve our carbon emissions by 2030.
“In this year’s EcoVadis rating, we further improved our environment-related scores. The fact that we were again awarded Gold status is an important indication that our sustainability initiatives are making excellent progress. And of course we continue to further enhance our activities in this area in close consultation with our stakeholders,” Frank Markus Weber comments.
In 2021, the company has cut its carbon emissions by more than 73% compared to the 2018 level. To reduce its carbon emissions by 50% until 2030, Knorr-Bremse will implement measures and projects on three main pillars which includes energy efficiency, in-house energy generation, and procurement of energy from renewable sources. Any unavoidable emissions that may remain once the company has reached its reduction target will be further reduced by using additional renewable energy, or otherwise offset by subscribing to Gold Standard climate protection projects. As a result of the ongoing investment in these three solutions the residual emissions were cut to 35,000 metric tonnes at the end of 2021. The successful reduction was largely due to the use of green energy, which accounts for a steadily increasing share of Knorr-Bremse’s energy consumption. In 2021, 98% of the electricity supplied to Knorr-Bremse worldwide came from renewable energy sources, obtained through green-energy contracts or certificates. Since 2019, Knorr-Bremse has also implemented projects for saving 5,500 MWh of energy per year, and for expanding the Group’s in-house electricity generation capacity by 1,900 MWh per year.
