East Japan Railway Company (JR East) has unveiled the first images and animations of the E10 Shinkansen, a next-generation high-speed train designed by UK-based consultancy Tangerine. The E10 will replace the existing E2 and E5 series on the Tohoku route, with the first units expected to enter service in 2030.
This marks the first time a non-Japanese design firm has been commissioned to shape one of Japan’s iconic bullet trains. Tangerine has developed both the train’s exterior livery and its interior, designed to enhance the passenger experience across all travel classes.
A design inspired by Japan
The E10 Shinkansen’s design is influenced by Japan’s natural and urban landscapes. Its livery features a mid-green colour palette, reflecting the forests and coastlines along the route, while graphic elements are inspired by the silhouette of Sakura flowers, a national symbol.
The interior design follows Japanese aesthetic traditions, with a focus on hospitality and craftsmanship. Indirect lighting creates a soft, calming atmosphere, while seating arrangements are tailored to accommodate a range of passengers. The design maintains a consistent theme across all classes, with coordinated wall and seat upholstery contributing to a refined, premium experience.
The next-generation Shinkansen: enhanced safety and performance
The E10 Shinkansen incorporates advanced technology tested on the ALFA-X experimental train. Its braking distance has been reduced by 15% compared to existing models, and a new system has been introduced to absorb seismic shocks, minimising train damage and derailments.
The train will maintain a maximum operational speed of 320 km/h, in line with current Tohoku Shinkansen services. Running tests are scheduled to begin in autumn 2027.
A total of ten trains will replace the E5 Series, which currently operates on the Hayabusa and Hayate services, as well as the E2 Series, which serves the Yamabiko and Nasuno routes.
JR East President Yoichi Kise emphasised the company’s commitment to enhancing passenger comfort and improving travel experiences with the launch of the E10 Shinkansen.
