JICA loan for Patna metro signed

Patna metroThe Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Government of India signed on March 29, loan agreements to support four projects including Patna metro and Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail.

For the construction of Patna metro, JICA signed a JPY 98.6 billion (USD 738.8 million) loan which will support the construction of two lines expected to be completed in December 2028.

The first metro corridor will be built along east-west axis including 14 stations with two interchange stations with the North–South line (corridor 2). 10 km of underground will be served by six stations and a 7 km elevated section will be served by eight stations. The 16.9 km line will run from Danapur Cantonment, 14 km west of Patna centre, to Khemni Chak.

The 14 km North-South Line will have 12 stations. 6 km with five stations will be elevated and an 8 km  underground section with seven stations will be underground. The line will connect Patna Junction Railway station and Inter-State Bus Terminal (Bairiya ISBT) which was opened in September 2020.

The state of Bihar and the national government approved Patna metro project in 2019 when the Patna Metro Rail Corporation (PMRC) was established. Together with Technical and Economic Service (RITES), the two companies developed the final detailed project report for the first phase of the project covering the two 31 km lines.

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) awarded NCC Limited a contract to build a 6.1 km section of Line 2 from Malahi Pakri to New ISBT (package PC-01). Rs. 552.93 crore (USD 67 million) is the value of the contract with construction works scheduled to be completed within 30 months.

DMRC announced that the first tunnel boring machines to build twin tunnels for the Line 2 between Patna train station and Patliputra Bus Terminal will begin excavation works. The tunnel for Line 2 is plit into two phases with the first 3.6 metre-long tunnel between Moin-ul-Haq Stadium and SK Memorial Hall and under the second phase, the TBM will dig a 1.4 km tunnel from Gandhi Maidan to Patna railway station.

In October 2021, DMRC issued a Letter of Acceptance to Tuaman Engineering Limited for the work Contract PE 02 covering the design, verification, detail engineering, supply, testing and commissioning of electrical and mechanical systems for the elevated stations of both lines, including for the Depot of Patna metro.
