Panama-metrou_1523399_698139350216423_685187926_oGovernments of Panama and Japan sealed the terms of technical and financial cooperation for the construction of the Metro de Panamá Line 3.
In this Memorandum the two governments agree to use Japanese monorail technology for Line 3 of the Metro, while the civil works component will be ruled by the local Panamanian regulations. Project funding will be provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Line 3 will be 26.7 km long and stop at 14 stations.
The final design of the fourth bridge over the Panama Canal, to be used for this line, is to be completed.
The tender for construction will take place in the first quarter of 2017.
The project, which could start this year and be completed by 2022, will be the largest Japan-sourced infrastructure investment in Panama’s history and Central America’s first monorail system.
Hitachi is “highly interested” in the project and participated in a feasibility study. Mitsubishi is also considering competing for the business.
