Izmir Metropolitan Municipality strengthened its fleet with investment of TRY 320 million (EUR 82 million) and 95 new metro cars, out of which it received 55 new cars. Metropolitan Mayor Aziz Kocaoglu added that the rail system network in Izmir is growing rapidly.
The authorities in Izmir estimated that the urban rail network of the city [the metro, tram and light rail transit (IZBAN) systems] will grow and expand at 180 km by the end of 2017 and by 2020 it will reach 250 km. Currently the rail network in Izmir is 130 km long, with all three above-mentioned means of transport.
The new 55 metro cars were been delivered by China’s CRRC state-owned company. The new train sets will perform the detailed tests before starting the journeys like the previous trains. The trains will be subjected to 11 different tests following static and dynamic checks.
