Indonesia plans to build a high-speed rail link between the capital Jakarta and second city Surabaya, despite scrapping a shorter line, according to a presidential palace statement released on September 25. „At this time, the government is preparing to develop a high-speed train from Jakarta to Surabaya and a rail network outside Java,” the presidential office said.
Indonesia has canceled plans for its first high-speed train from Jakarta to Bandung, casting aside proposals from China and Japan after the two competed for months to secure a USD5 billion deal in the Southeast Asian nation. Instead, Indonesia invited bids for a medium-speed railway between Jakarta and Surabaya,a 600 km route, east of Jakarta.
The government had decided against a railway linking the capital, Jakarta, with the large city of Bandung because it involved government financing rather than outside investment, and because the approximately 150-kilometer (93-mile) route was deemed too short for a high-speed train.
