Indian Railways to introduce warning system for unmanned railway crossings

06-indiaThe Indian Railways are considering the possibility of introducing a warning system for unmanned level crossings, which account for 40% of train accidents and 60% of fatalities.
The system will be equipped with two blinkers and a siren to alert people to remain off the tracks when a train is within one km from the level crossing. The system is currently under trial in the Salem division. The warning system would also send SMS alerts about passing trains to pre-programmed mobile numbers. It would be fitted with solar panels and have a theft protection system able to send SMS alerts on pre-programmed mobile numbers in cases of vandalism at the level crossings, which happen mostly in remote areas.
The Indian railway network has 30,348 level crossings, out of which around 11,563 are unmanned.
