India joins international transport corridor agreement

India has joined the Ashgabat agreement which envisages the creation of an international transport and transit corridor set to facilitate trade relations between Central Asia and the Persian Gulf regions. This agreement will make it possible to enhance connectivity within the Eurasian region and synchronize it with other transport corridors within that region including the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC).
All the four founding members (Turkmenistan, Oman, Uzbekistan and Iran) have consented to the accession of India to the Agreement. India’s accession entered into force on 3 February 2018, the Indian Foreign Ministry announced. India had deposited the Instrument of Accession with Turkmenistan in April 2016.
Accession to the Agreement will diversify India’s connectivity options with Central Asia and have a positive influence on India’s trade and commercial ties with the region.
