Hyundai Rotem opens Sao Paulo assembly plant

brHyundai Rotem has completed the construction of the rolling stock plant in Brazil, celebrating the opening ceremony on March 30. The 150,000-square meter site is located in Araraquara City, Sao Paulo in Brazil with an initial annual production capacity of 200 trains.
The decision to build the plant comes after Hyundai-Rotem won a contract to supply 30 self-propelled electric trains, known as EMUs, to São Paulo commuter rail operator Paulista Metropolitan Trains Company. The Korean company is also supplying 55 trains for the Salvador metro through concessionaire CCR and has also supplied the train fleet for São Paulo’s metro Line 4 and Rio de Janeiro. All these vehicles were imported from South Korea. The new plant will also bring a new technology, which is not yet in Brazilian factories: driverless trains, which will be provided to Metrô Bahia.
At the end of 2014, the South Korean railcar manufacturer signed an agreement with the government of the state of São Paulo to build the rolling stock assembly plant. On April 2, the company organized groundbreaking ceremony of its new plant in Araraquara.
