Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell told state lawmakers that the city needs more money to finish building Oahu’s rail transit project. Up to present, investments in the project have cumulated $5.2 billion (4.6 billion euros), and the cost is growing. Accordingly, he asked that the time limit on a part of the general excise tax that goes to rail be lifted. The tax expires in 2022. Oahu’s multibillion-dollar rail project had been on hold for about a year, until work finally started in September 2013.
