Hitachi Rail to upgrade systems on Lisbon’s Cascais Line

Hitachi Rail has secured two contracts to modernise telecommunications and passenger information systems on the Cascais Line, one of Lisbon’s busiest commuter routes.

In partnership with SISINT and Conecticabo, Hitachi Rail will implement a fully automated Passenger Information System (SIP) across all stations on the line. This system will provide real-time updates on train operations, ensuring a more seamless and efficient experience for passengers. The new technology will also support multimedia formats, allowing for future enhancements in passenger communication.

Hitachi Rail has also been contracted to upgrade the telematics systems on the Cascais Line. This includes revamping the data network, time information systems, energy management, and SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems. The project commenced in Q4 2024.

These contracts reinforce Hitachi Rail’s commitment to advancing Portugal’s railway infrastructure. The company’s expertise in modernising existing railway systems while maintaining high standards of reliability and safety is central to this project.

Hitachi Rail has been a key player in Portugal’s rail sector since the early 1990s. Working with Infraestruturas de Portugal, the company has delivered advanced signalling and telecommunications systems, passenger information solutions, and critical infrastructure such as the Lisbon Operational Control Centre, which oversees 70% of the country’s rail traffic.

Hitachi Rail was also instrumental in introducing ETCS Level 2 signalling in Portugal, first on international corridors and later on the Cascais Line, further cementing its role as a trusted partner in railway modernisation.

“Hitachi Rail’s involvement in modernising the telecommunications and passenger information systems on the Cascais Line demonstrates our commitment to delivering state-of-the-art digital solutions that enhance both operational efficiency and the passenger experience,” said Joaquim Santos, Vice President of the ICS Business Line at Hitachi Rail.

This latest project adds to a series of successful public tenders for telematics solutions. Hitachi Rail has previously been awarded contracts for deploying advanced telecommunications systems on the Sines, Évora, and Beira Alta Lines, further solidifying its reputation as an experienced, supplier-agnostic telecommunications integrator.
