Groupe Porteur selected for Gatineau-Ottawa tramway project

The Société de transport de l’Outaouais (STO) has awarded Groupe Porteur, a consortium comprising SYSTRA Canada, Egis, and EXP, the contract for professional, technical, and multidisciplinary services for the Gatineau-Ottawa tramway project.

Gatineau-Ottawa tramway project involves a 24-kilometre tramway that will link downtown Gatineau with Ottawa, enhancing regional connectivity and urban mobility. Groupe Porteur will collaborate with architectural firms Richez_Associés and Provencher Roy to support the TramGO Project Office through all phases of the CAD 114 million (USD 78 million) contract.

Groupe Porteur’s responsibilities for the tramway project include:

  1. Conducting technical and environmental studies
  2. Overseeing procurement processes
  3. Supervising construction and commissioning tests

The tramway will feature a Y-shaped route with a South Branch (10.5 km) and North Branch (7.5 km), 37 stations, and four multimodal exchange hubs. The majority of the route, 22 kilometres, will be located in Quebec, with the remaining two kilometres in Ontario. Commissioning is planned for 2035.

“We are honored by the trust STO has placed in Groupe Porteur. Our team is dedicated to delivering a sustainable and efficient transportation system for Gatineau and Ottawa,” said Samuel Derosiaux, Executive Vice President, Transit at SYSTRA Canada.

Egis’s Chief Commercial Officer in Canada, Jean Steenhouwer, highlighted the project’s phased approach. “This spring, we will submit a detailed work plan outlining project deliverables and timelines. This will serve as the foundation for upcoming public consultations,” Steenhouwer said.

EXP’s Senior Vice President, Infrastructure, Guillaume Halde, added, “This project represents more than just transit—it’s a vision for sustainable mobility and urban modernization. We are proud to contribute to shaping the region’s future.”

The technical and environmental studies for the Quebec portion of the route will begin in spring 2025. The project’s phased timeline will allow for thorough evaluation and preparation before major construction begins.
