The Polish Office of Rail Transport (UTK) has authorised Newag’s Griffin locomotives – E4DCU electric locomotive and EU160 002 – 008 type locomotive, to enter passenger services provided by PKP Intercity.
Under the contract with PKP Intercity, Newag will supply 30 Griffin electric locomotives valuated at PLN 550 million (EUR 127.28 million).
On February 21, Newag and PKP Intercity have officialy presented the new ETCS-equipped locomotives designed to ensure the interoperability of railway transport. They will operated on various routes across Poland network.
In September 2019, PKP Intercity ordered 10 additional Griffin locomotives under a PLN 183.8 million (EUR 42.5 million) contract.
The E4DCU Griffin electric locomotive has obtained the authorisation being compliant with the Technical Specifications for Interoperability. The permit is valid indefinitely, without operational restrictions. They have a certificate of compliance with the ETCS level 2 baseline 3.4.0. They are able for passenger and freight transport, being able to pull trains of 800 to 3200 tonnes.
Both electric locomotive types are four-axle vehicles able to run at speeds of 160 km/h. They are characterised by a high safety standard, comfortable interior ensuring high comfort for drivers. The modular design allows it to be adapted to the specific needs of individual operators.
