The project for the Prague new tram line Malovanka – Strahov has secured the building permit, the public transport company DPP announced.
The project documentation for the selection of a contractor is now being processed, and DPP plans to announce a public contract and call for a winner in 2025. The operator expects construction to start in spring 2026, and construction to be completed in autumn 2027. The estimated cost of building the new line is approximately CZK 800 million (EUR 31.6 million).
The 1.3 km line will be connected to the existing tram network on Bělohorská and Myslbekova streets and the track will lead from Bělohorská along Vaníčková Street to the final loop of Great Strahov Stadium. DPP will build three stops – the Malovanka stop, shared with the existing line to Bíla Hora, Koleje Strahov and Stadion Strahov.
The existing Malovanka tram stops will be moved, and the new ones will be shifted by 100-130 metres towards the entre and built on Bělohorská street. Thanks to this desing, the Malovanka stop will serve connections from the existing line to Bíla Hora from the new line to Strahov, and there will be an easy transfer.
The stops of Koleje Strahov will be situated in the area of the university dormitories, roughly in the place of the existing bus stops of the same name. Stadion Strahov stops will be created in the new loop of the same name and will be common for handling tram and trolleybus lines. The Stadion Strahov loop, with a continuous pre-departure track, will be built by DPP at the location of an existing bus interchange. The construction of the new tram line Malovanka–Strahov will take place in close coordination with the electrification of bus lines no. 176 and 191.
“Thanks to Prague new tram line, students from the Strahov dormitories and visitors to the sports grounds will have a better and emission-free transport connection. We are thus continuing the record expansion of the tram network in Prague. Currently we are already building a line on Wenceslas Square, Pankrác or Dvorecký most. The majority of passengers in Prague are transported by public transport and we want to offer them the best possible quality,” the Deputy Mayor of Prague for Transport, Zdeněk Hřib, said.
The new line will replace the existing bus service from Strahov to the Dejvická metro station (on Line A) with a higher-capacity and locally emission-free tram service with a higher degree of separation from other traffic. This will not only reduce bus traffic but also the impact on the environment and will speed up and increase the reliability of public transport compared to bus, especially during peak times.
The construction and commissioning of the Malovanka – Strahov line will deliver a direct connection to important transport hubs and parts with the centre of Prague. The line will provide direct connection to Masarykovo train station, Náměstí Republiky square, lying at the boundary of the Old Town and New Town, Wenceslas Square, located in the New Town of Prague, Muzeum interchange metro station (on lines A and C) serving the National Museum and Náměstí Míru metro station (Line A).
To build the new tram line, DPP applied for subsidies from the European Union from the Operational Programme Transport, which should cover 85% of the eligible costs, with the condition to obtain building permit, which DPP has currently fulfilled.
DPP is currently modernising and expanding Prague’s public transport network and acquires new vehicles to provide modern and fast services. This year, the company and Škoda signed an 8-year framework agreement for the supply of 40 ForCity Plus Praha light rail vehicles with options for up to 160 LRVs. CZK 16.6 billion (EUR 656 million) is the value of the contract under which the first 20 vehicles will be delivered by the end of 2025.
The construction of metro Line D is the most important project the city has implemented in the last years. The 10.6 km driverless line with 10 stations is expected to be entirely completed in 2031. The project is carried out in three phases with four sections (two sections in the first D1 phase, one in D2 and one in D3), due to its complexity.
DPP achieved a milestone when completed the excavation of 2.1 km on tunnels on the D1 Pankrác – Olbrachtova section and in October 2024, the company completed the tunnel connection with Line C at Pankrác station. In October 2023, the local transport company awarded a EUR 1.2 billion contract for the construction of the second section.
