Ireland’s National Transport Authority (NTA) has released details of its new draft Transport Strategy for the Greater Dublin Area 2016-2035, setting out a cohesive and integrated transport framework to support and sustain the region’s development.
The draft strategy is subject to a statutory public consultation until November 13th 2015.
NTA proposes two new metro lines-Metro North that links St. Stephen’s Green to Swords and serving Dublin Airport, operating in-tunnel under Dublin City Centre, and providing a high-frequency, high-capacity service; and the second metro, Metro South, from St. Stephen’s Green to Bride’s Glen, completing a full north-south high-capacity high-frequency cross-city rail corridor.
Under the strategy, the authority proposes four Luas lines (Luas to Poolbeg / Finglas / Lucan) and for heavy rail are included 7 projects: the reopening of Phoenix Park Tunnel Link for passenger services, the finalization of the City Centre Resignalling programme, the implementation of DART Expansion Programme, the development of new train control centre, the construction of additional train stations, the implementation of a programme for station upgrades and enhancement and ensuring an appropriate level of train fleet.
In addition, the authority proposes a cycling network, road projects, park and ride facilities.
The NTA says that around EUR 10 billion need to be invested in transport system and according to the analysis, the plans are followed, it will result in the State gaining EUR 13 billion.
