Granite has been awarded a USD 71 million contract by the United States Army Corps of Engineers to upgrade and expand the rail yard at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas. The project, funded through federal sources, was included in Granite’s third-quarter 2024 Capital Allocation Plan (CAP).
The planned improvements include the addition of new loading spurs, an expanded vehicle staging area, and the creation of a secondary connection between the rail yard and the Union Pacific Railroad. These enhancements aim to increase the rail yard’s capacity, streamline operations, and shorten rail loading times.
“Our work at Fort Bliss highlights Granite’s capabilities while fostering internal collaboration and offering growth opportunities for our employees,” Derek Betts, Vice President of Regional Operations at Granite, said.
“This initiative represents a new strategic partnership between the Federal Division and the Regions. It provides regional employees with valuable federal work experience and strengthens our presence in West Texas,” Curt Haldeman, another Vice President of Regional Operations, added.
Construction on the project is slated to begin in February 2025, with completion expected by June 2027.
Incorporated since 1922, Granite (NYSE:GVA) is one of the largest diversified construction and construction materials companies in the United States as well as a full-suite civil construction provider.
